Men's Group

You may be interested in what we can offer you. More services you can find below. We do everything at a high level.

Purpose:

The men’s group is a safe, facilitated space in which participants bond with each other to support self-transformation

Masculinised psychotherapy:

The explicit all-male culture inside a men’s group accelerates behaviour change without disruption of the male code. The absence of women secures a space in which men can deal with their concerns in their own unique way

Why is group work so effective?

It can be life-changing for participants to discover they are not the only ones with problems. You may meet a group of strangers who share challenges that you can relate to. Exchanging stories of pain and joy with others is very therapeutic. You learn by just being fully present, listening, resonating with the narratives of others, and engaging.

What kind of commitment is required:

The punctual attendance of 10-14 weekly in-person / online sessions. A session is 90 minutes (1 ½ hours).

What happens during the first session?

The first session feels like a workshop, and it begins with a team building / ice breaker activity. This is to take care of ‘nerves’ and build social cohesion. The main purpose of the first session is culture building and team formation. Some of the major tasks include introductions, clarification of purpose, contracting on ground rules, exploration of expectations, introduction to a model of humanity. During the first session participants are expected to only share public information about themselves. Sensitive disclosures are discouraged at this early stage of group formation. The group is consumed with building a sense of belonging and allowing members to engage with the group’s purpose and understanding the major group tasks

Selection Criteria:

A men’s group is usually constituted by 6-8 men aged 14 years upwards. We try to persuade individual therapy clients to join a men’s group because all-male group therapy is often more dynamic (quicker) in helping one work through concerns including that of relationship issues (mostly with spouse or partner), addictions (pornography, sex, substance abuse, gambling) or problems with aggression or violence. Other concerns that participants bring to the men’s group include career and work-related issues, self-esteem and identity concerns like lack of self-confidence, fear of public speaking and so forth

Exclusion criteria:

Family, friends and colleagues are not allowed to participate in the same group programme. The group works best if it is constituted by total strangers of diverse races, ethnicities, religion, etc.

Cost of the programm:

R300 per session
